  Diary of a Data Catastrophe

In the event of a loss of data will you be ready to spring back? Or will you lose precious hours or days trying to bring your systems back on-line? The following is an example of what you might be faced with in the event of a data or network catastrophe in your office.

It can be anything. Rain or shine, weekday or week end. You can't prevent the events that can lead to data loss. A motorist sneezes causing him to ram a power pole thereby cutting off power to city blocks. One of them is yours and you are suddenly plunged into darkness. In a situation like this, right after handling any life threatening situations, your next thought should be…"what is the status of my data and systems?" With the proper precautions you will be able to answer these questions with the confidence that comes of having proactively dealt with the issues of Data Backup and Uninterruptable Power Supply.

In the example of losing power to your office, shortly after you see the lights go out you will hear the warning beeps of your UPS systems announcing that they have lost their utility power. If you had had Creative Computer Services install and configure the power management software that is included with many of the UPS systems that we sell and service you could relax and know that your servers were engaged in automatically shutting themselves down. This planned shut down is useful for preventing files that are open and active on the server from getting lost or corrupted. Damage to such files can prevent your network from booting up or can contribute to errors in your system. In the protected office, when the utility power was restored, you would simply reboot your servers and go about your business. In an unprepared or unprotected office you might be faced with having to have your network operating system reinstalled or repaired, a process that can take days. One day of having your whole office shut down from a lack of access to your network can pay for a lot of protection.

After getting your network back up and running, the other shoe drops and programs that worked before are now generating errors. Your membership or client database is inaccessible to your staff. You don't even know the status of the processes you were running when the black out hit. Your next move may be a restore from backup. This process takes the most recent backup of your data and uses it to replace the corrupted data. The better your back up processes the less time will be required to get your data back to the point that it was at prior to losing power. Do you have a tape from last night? If your backups have fallen off lately or you haven't been checking them on a regular basis, you may find yourself stuck with a copy of the database from weeks ago or worse. What happens to all the labor hours that were keeping the data up to date? Can you imagine what would happen if you didn't have any backup copy of your data? Now that would be a real catastrophe.

With Creative Computer Services maintaining your backups you can rest assured that you have some recourse to starting from scratch. Our techs will routinely check the quality of your backup and make sure that you can restore from the tapes you are using. Configuring a backup to run automatically on your server can be a daunting and complex task. And your data is dynamic, it grows daily. You need to make sure that the files critical to your success are included in the backup job. This is not the place for cutting corners.
